Why this tour

The classic Bali sunrise, and the one day where the driver matters most: a 2 a.m. pickup, a warm car to sleep in, and someone who knows exactly where the trailhead is in the dark.

Hour by hour

  1. Hotel pickup

    Yes, two in the morning. Sleep in the car; Adi has blankets.

  2. Trailhead, Toya Bungkah

    Meet the licensed local mountain guide (mandatory). Torches and a light breakfast provided by the guide.

  3. Climb to the summit (1,717 m)

    About two hours on a steady volcanic-sand path. Moderate fitness needed.

  4. Sunrise on the crater rim

    Eggs cooked in volcanic steam, monkeys, the lake below and Agung behind it.

  5. Batur natural hot springs

    Warm pools on the lake shore to undo the climb.

    Entrance Rp 150.000 pp→ 30 min drive

  6. Coffee plantation stop (optional) and drive home

    Back at your hotel around midday.

Hiring a local guide from the village association is compulsory and supports the community. Stay on the path.

If it rains

In the wet season the summit is sometimes in cloud. Adi checks the forecast the evening before and offers to move the date.

Questions about this tour

How hard is the climb?

About 700 m of ascent on loose volcanic sand over two hours. Anyone who can walk uphill for two hours can do it; kids from about 8 manage it.
